Welcome!

Please read the guidelines before booking a slot with our Speaking Studio PCs

Guidelines

  • You must be an undergraduate or a UGC-funded postgraduate student. If you are a student of a self-funded program (e.g., a taught master’s program), CSS is not able to serve you.

  • Message Regarding Artificial Intelligence-Written Texts: The role of CSS consultants is to discuss with authors how to improve their own work. Generative AI tools can play a part in the exploratory, pre-writing stages of assignments. However, HKU expects students to take full ownership of and responsibility for their work, and to avoid plagiarism. This means you must produce the product of your assignments. Please acknowledge any use of generative AI output (directly copied or paraphrased/modified), in your work by highlighting it in yellow (for AI text), or acknowledging it in a caption (for AI images).

  • Show your Student ID card or photo ID when attending the session. No session will be delivered in cases where the ID of the person attending does not match the ID under which the session was booked. (For zoom consultations, you must turn on your camera at the start of the consultation, and then show your face, along with your ID card, so that the consultant can verify that you are the person who has booked the slot).

  • If you want to cancel your booked timeslot, log into https://caes.hku.hk/css and click “Cancel this booking” at least 24 hours before the consultation, otherwise you will be marked as “absent”. If you are absent from 2 CSS sessions in a semester, you will be banned from booking for the rest of the semester.

  • Please be punctual

1:1 consultations:

  • You can choose to meet your consultant face-to-face or on Zoom (please put a Zoom meeting link on the booking slot page no later than 24 hours prior to your consultation; we cannot guarantee that your consultant will meet you punctually online if you do not upload your link at least 24 hours prior. Please also make sure you start the meeting on your side on the day of the consultation).

  • Put in your consultation goals & upload a file/link that you want the consultant to look at (no pdf files; 10MB max.) at least 24 hours before the consultation (e.g. upload your work on Thursday if your session is on the following Monday). Make sure your sharing settings for any online files are set to 'everyone'.

  • Any assignment you upload for a consultation must be your own work. You cannot bring somebody else's assignment for a consultation.

  • You must book the correct unit for the service you seek (e.g., writing support for the Writing Centre, speaking or presentation practice for the Speaking Studio). Consultants will exercise the right to not deliver a consultation if the wrong service has been booked.

  • Booking quotas vary based on forecasted demand of each service during each week, and are put in place to ensure equitable access to 1:1 consultations. See below for the number of consultations you may book during different periods of the semester.

Discussion Groups and Workshops:

  • These are all held face-to-face.

  • Check the discussion / workshop topics shown on the booking page, and select one you are interested in.

  • Please be punctual.

  • In the event that no students are registered for a workshop or discussion group 24 hours before the session start time, the session will be canceled and then converted into a 1-on-1 consultation session.

  • If there is only one student registered to a workshop or discussion group, we will offer them a 1-on-1 consultation covering the same materials.
